Washington, D.C.—U.S. Senate Finance Committee Chairman Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) issued the following statement on President Donald Trump’s first State of the Union Address, highlighting a safer, more prosperous America after one year of unified Republican leadership.
“This evening, President Trump underscored the Administration’s success in advancing an agenda that has helped working Americans get ahead. The southern border is secure, inflation is under control, crime rates are falling and the economy is growing.
“Thanks to the landmark Working Families Tax Cuts, virtually every American began the new year with meaningful new tax relief. The law not only prevented the largest tax hike in history but also restored and made permanent critical pro-growth tax provisions that are already increasing domestic investment and powering business expansion.
“Moreover, hundreds of thousands of Idaho families are benefitting from permanent expansions of the standard deduction and the Child Tax Credit and new tax relief on tipped income, overtime and auto loan interest. Real wages are up thousands of dollars. Working parents are benefitting from improvements to child care tax provisions. Senior citizens have a new $6,000 deduction to offset taxes on Social Security benefits, while young Idahoans will benefit from new child savings accounts to help build financial security. Over 150,000 Idaho small business owners will benefit from a variety of permanently enhanced pro-growth provisions to help them hire more workers and invest in new equipment and facilities.
“We have also taken significant steps to make health care more affordable for all Americans. In the last year, we have enacted legislation to bring down the cost of prescription drugs, increase access to care, improve health care quality and support treatment of diseases that affect millions of Americans.
“While there is always more work to do, Idaho families burdened by the historic inflation and economic mismanagement of the previous Administration are already feeling relief. I look forward to another year working closely with President Trump and his team on a pro-growth economic agenda that fuels American prosperity.”
