Idahoans contact me regularly with valuable input about the issues our country faces. S. 1547, the America the Beautiful Act, is one of the issues Idahoans have contacted me about, and the following is my response:
I support this legislation and agree we have a responsibility to protect our environment.
I share your interest in conserving and protecting the natural beauty found within our national parks. Conservation and outdoor recreation go hand in hand, and enjoying all the outdoor opportunities our state has to offer is an important asset to residents and visitors alike.
S. 1547 seeks to reauthorize and enhance the Legacy Restoration Fund (LRF), which was originally established by the Great American Outdoors Act in 2020. This fund was created to address the extensive backlog of deferred maintenance on public lands. In June, the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources advanced an amended version of the legislation that would reauthorize the fund through Fiscal Year 2031 while making reforms to improve project selection, transparency and implementation, and should it come before the full Senate for a vote, I intend to vote in support.
Our nation is fortunate to be home to vast natural resources, wildlife and landscapes, which provide innumerable ecological, educational and economic opportunities. National parks throughout the United States have long been considered national treasures and “America’s best idea.” All Idahoans, other Americans and visitors should be able to use and enjoy reasonable access to public lands and the benefits they entail. The importance of outdoor recreation to Idaho cannot be overstated, and I support policies that protect public access to public lands.
As we move forward in the 119th Congress, I will work with my Senate colleagues to advance legislation that promotes the effective stewardship of our natural resources, environment and wildlife, and ensures access to federal lands for the benefit of the public. I will continue to advocate for sound policies that promote the proper management of and access to our national parks in a fiscally responsible manner.
Again, thank you for contacting me. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughtful observations with me as it is essential for me to know of the concerns of all Idahoans. Please feel free to contact me in the future on matters of interest to you.
