Crapo To Honor Union Members, Shelter

Senator will present â??Spirit of Idahoâ?? Awards Monday

Boise - The many hours of volunteer service and the commitment to safety evident at a Boise shelter for women and children will be spotlighted Monday as Idaho Senator Mike Crapo presents his â??Spirit of Idahoâ?? Award to local union members, foundation groups, and staff at the City Light Home for Women and Children. The awards ceremony is planned for 11:15 a.m., Monday, May 24th, at the City Light facilities at 1404 West Jefferson.Crapo will present his â??Spirit of Idahoâ?? Award to members of the Plumbers and Pipe Fitters Union Local 296. The union members spent many volunteer hours installing pipe work and offering other volunteer labor to expand the capacity of the emergency shelter from ten to nearly 30 beds, saving the City Light Home more than $10,000 in expenses.Crapo will also honor workers at the City Light facility, which is an affiliate of the Boise Rescue Mission, and he will also honor three foundation groups who have assisted in costs relating to the expansion.â??The giving spirit shown by Local 296 stands as an example for all Idahoans,â?? Crapo said. â??Not only are they providing a tremendous service for women and children whose lives could be saved by accessibility to emergency housing, they are also saving the facility critical operating capital they would have otherwise had to spend to get the work done. I salute members of Local 296, the dedicated workers at the facility, and the foundations who have all come together to make the Treasure Valley a safer place for women and children.â??Crapo has advocated solutions and offered legislation to combat domestic violence involving women since joining the Senate. He created the â??Spirit of Idahoâ?? Award in 2000 to honor Idahoans who work to benefit others but often do not get the public recognition they deserve.
