Washington, DC – This Sunday marks the national remembrance of Gold Star Mother’s Day. Idaho Senator Mike Crapo is asking Idahoans to take a moment this weekend and remember and thank those who have raised sons and daughters who made the ultimate sacrifice while defending America’s freedom as part of the national recognition event.

“President Woodrow Wilson was the first to use the description ‘Gold Star Mother’ in the aftermath of World War l,” Crapo noted. “Since then, the last Sunday in September has been observed as Gold Star Mother’s Day across the nation—a time for Americans to remember not only the sacrifice of our brave men and women defending our freedoms, but the mothers who have also carried the heavy burden of their ultimate sacrifice. We owe them no less.”

Tradition calls for Americans to observe the day by flying the flag and attending appropriate ceremonies. During World War I, families who had lost a son or daughter during the war displayed a Gold Star emblem in their windows to mark the loss.
