Contact: Susan Wheeler
Washington, DC –A resolution passed recently by the Senate and co-sponsored by Idaho Senator Mike Crapo designates November 9 through November 15 as “National Veterans Awareness Week.” The resolution, S. Res. 204, emphasizes the need to develop educational programs regarding the contributions of veterans to the country.
“The current events in Iraq, Afghanistan, and other areas of the world remind us of the important role our veterans have played and continue to play in maintaining our national security and way of life,” Crapo said. “It is important that our young people understand the many sacrifices our veterans have made in protecting our nation. This resolution encourages educational activities directed at elementary and secondary students in order to enhance their understanding of the contributions of veterans.”
The resolution was adopted unanimously by the Senate in each of the past three years. In both 2001 and 2002, President Bush issued a proclamation urging citizens to observe National Veterans Awareness Week. The week’s educational emphasis is meant to complement Veterans Day observances.
