Washington, DC – Idaho Senator Mike Crapo issued the following statement today concerning President George W. Bush’s nomination of Judge Alberto R. Gonzales, presently Counsel to the President, to take over as U.S. Attorney General, replacing John Ashcroft.

“Judge Gonzales is very well-qualified to become our next Attorney General and I am confident he will be confirmed quickly by the U.S. Senate. Gonzales has not only a long and distinguished legal career as a lawyer both in Texas and in Washington, D.C., but also has served as a Supreme Court Justice for the State of Texas.

“The Department of Justice has played a lead role in our war against terrorism, and it remains critical the department be headed with a person of Judge Gonzales’ credentials. As Counsel to the President, he has helped in the transformation of our law enforcement efforts in the wake of 9/11. I applaud President Bush’s initiative to recommend the first-ever Hispanic to become our U.S. Attorney General.”
