Committees and Caucuses

As a lifelong Idahoan, I am pleased that my home state helped me develop a common-sense approach to doing business in the U.S. Senate. I am currently serving my third term as a U.S. Senator from Idaho, having previously served three terms as Idaho's 2nd District Representative in the U.S. House of Representatives (1993-1999).

The Congress has given me many leadership opportunities to share Idaho's perspectives. I presently serve as a Deputy Republican Whip for the 112th Congress, and held the same position in the 111th, 110th, 109th and 108th Congresses. I have also been privileged to serve as Co-chairman of the Congressional Sportsman's Caucus and the Western Water Caucus as well as a co-chair and founder of the Senate Nuclear Cleanup Caucus.  During the time I served in the U.S. House of Representatives, I served on House Leadership as New Member Leader and Strategic Planning Leader and as Deputy Whip for the Western Region.

In March of 2004, in response to a need for more public awareness and education, I formed the Congressional COPD Caucus, which is dedicated to educating Members of Congress about COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and advocating for assistance and research. I am honored that Arkansas Senator Blanche Lincoln serves as Co-Chair of this caucus with me.
